The Glen Resource and Sports Centre opened in March 2001. The Cork City Council owned facility is managed by a voluntary Board, consisting of local community representatives. Ongoing support is provided by Cork City Council in the form of capital investment. Capital funding has also been received from the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism and the Dormant Accounts. The centre employs a full-time professional manager to oversee the operation, which is run by a total of 22 part-time, community employment staff funded by FAS. The Centre also directly employs a full-time Community Sports Development Officer and 16 part-time sports and adventure instructors. FAS Community Employment provides unemployed and other disadvantaged persons with an opportunity to engage in useful work within their communities on a temporary basis. It helps long-term unemployed people re-enter the active workforce by breaking their experience of unemployment, through a return to routine and to assist them to embrace/develop both their technical and personal skills. FAS also assist and fund the facilitation of development and training for employees.
